MOXIFLOXACIN 0.5% + DEXAMETHASONE 0.1% is a fixed?dose combination ophthalmic (eye drop) preparation used to treat or prevent bacterial eye infections when significant inflammation is also present.

What it contains Moxifloxacin 0.5% w/v – a fourth?generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Dexamethasone 0.1% w/v – a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, swelling, redness, and allergic response in ocular tissues. It supplied as a sterile aqueous solution in 5 mL dropper bottles, with benzalkonium chloride as a preservative.

Because dexamethasone is a steroid, this product is not appropriate for all red or infected eyes. Key cautions include: Contraindicated / use only under specialist supervision in: Viral eye infections (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis) Fungal or mycobacterial ocular infections Untreated purulent infections without adequate antimicrobial coverage Known hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or dexamethasone Potential steroid?related risks (especially with prolonged use): Elevated intraocular pressure → glaucoma risk Delayed wound healing Cataract formation with long?term use Increased susceptibility to secondary infections Moxifloxacin?related considerations: Possible local irritation, burning, or allergic reactions Rare systemic fluoroquinolone effects if significantly absorbed (more relevant in children or with extensive use) If you have glaucoma, a history of steroid response, corneal thinning disorders, or are pregnant/breastfeeding, this should be used only if an ophthalmologist explicitly recommends it.

 

This combination is generally prescribed for: Post?operative care after ocular surgeries (e.g., cataract/phacoemulsification with IOL implantation) to: Prevent/treat bacterial infection Control post?surgical inflammation Bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, or other anterior segment infections where inflammation is clinically significant. Situations where a clinician wants dual therapy in one bottle instead of separate antibiotic and steroid drops. Clinical trials have shown this fixed?dose combo to be as effective and well?tolerated as using moxifloxacin and dexamethasone as separate drops given concomitantly.
