Telmisartan is used to lower high blood pressure. Telmisartan may also be used to lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. It’s given to adults who are 55 years or older who can’t take angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.Telmisartan belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers. Pregnant women

Telmisartan is a category D pregnancy drug. That means two things :

Studies show a risk of adverse effects to the fetus when the mother takes the drug. The benefits of taking the drug during pregnancy may outweigh the potential risks in certain cases. This drug may harm or be fatal to your unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Telmisartan should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.Women who are breast-feeding It isn’t known if telmisartan passes into breast milk. If it does, it may cause serious effects in a breast-feeding child.You and your doctor may need to decide if you’ll take this drug or breast-feed.

Allergies

Telmisartan can cause a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling of your face, throat, or tongue
  • Hives

The most common side effects that occur with telmisartan include:

  • Sinus pain and congestion
  • Back pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever and body aches
  • Upset stomach
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea

If these effects are mild, they may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks.

Some products that may interact with this drug include: aliskiren, lithium, ramipril, drugs that may increase the level of potassium in the blood (such as ACE inhibitors including benazepril/lisinoprilbirth control pills containing drospirenone).

Before taking telmisartan, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, bile duct blockage, high blood levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia), loss of too much body water and/or minerals (dehydration).

This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Too much sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause you to feel lightheaded. Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor.

This product may increase your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details. (See also Warning section.)
